Transferring an IRA Account from Fidelity to Pantile

Transferring an IRA account from Fidelity to Pantile - whether it's a former company-sponsored 401(k) account, 403(b) account, Roth account, or an existing IRA account at Fidelity - is easy! In summary, you're going to call Fidelity, have them liquidate the assets in your the account you want to transfer, then have them cut a check of that amount to Charles Schwab by referencing your name.

In more detail:

  1. Call Fidelity's "Workplace Accounts" department at 800-835-5095 - they're open Mon to Fri, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. ET.
  2. Say you want to rollover the account you have at Fidelity to another advisor, and that advisor "custodies" their accounts at Charles Schwab.
  3. They'll ask what sort of account you have at Schwab. Say it's a Rollover account.
  4. They'll ask if you've seen the disclosure document about rolling over IRA accounts from Fidelity. If you haven't, just say "no" and they'll email it to you.
  5. Ask that they send you a check, made out to "Charles Schwab & Co Inc FBO [Your Name]". "FBO" stands for "for the benefit of", and it ensures that the check goes to your specific accounts at Schwab.
  6. Once you receive the check by mail, you'll have 60 days to deposit it into your rollover account at Schwab. You can do that via their app by taking a picture of of the check (a mobile deposit), or mailing it in to Schwab directly.
